Reconstruction of Labiaplasty Deformities in Los Angeles

I have been seeing more women recently for reconstruction of labia minora deformities resulting from incorrectly performed labia reduction procedures.

There are several techniques for labia minora reduction.  I invented the “Alter labiaplasty” in which a central pie-shaped wedge or ‘V’ is removed from the most protuberant portion of each labium.  This procedure maintains the normal labial edge and anatomy while reducing the labial size.   However, the most common procedure performed is the trimming technique in which the labia are cut down to make them smaller. The trim can be done with a laser, scalpel, or scissors, causing a longitudinal scar or incision line throughout the length of the labium.  The resulting labia can be asymmetrical, wide, scarred, or scalloped.  Unfortunately, many doctors are removing too much or all of the labia, so many women are presenting to me with no labia; just an open vagina or introitus.    In these women, the clitoral hood is often abruptly hanging down over an empty vaginal opening.  Obviously, these women are very distressed, since this deformity results in severe loss of self-esteem, depression, isolation, and distrust of physicians.

Fortunately, I have developed new techniques for labial reconstruction.  If the woman has asymmetrical labia, I can usually perform wedge excisions to make them equal.  These wedges also remove a considerable amount of scar tissue or scalloping to give more normal labial edges.  I can also advance normal tissue and move tissue around to make the labia more normal.  The patients with no labia minora are the most distressed.   If a woman has a large clitoral hood, I invented a technique in which a portion of the clitoral hood on the absent labial side is used to recreate a labium minora.  If both labia were removed, I can reconstruct both sides.  It is remarkable how normal the appearance can be after reconstruction.  The reconstruction gives the woman a return of her self-esteem and a normal life.

This teen-ager had a radical amputation technique by another physician with total absence of her labia minora.  She underwent reconstruction with clitoral hood flaps, another procedure invented by me to correct this problem.
